It does indeed seem rugged though and one reviewer actually did a pretty rough test and it held up (including submerging in water). As for size/weight, here are the comparisons:

WD My Passport 1TB – 4.4 x 3.2 x 0.7 inches; 6.9 ounces
Seagate Backup Plus 1TB – 4.9 x 3.2 x 0.6 inches; 7 ounces
Transcend Information 1TB – 5.1 x 3.2 x 0.8 inches; 7.7 ounces

Sorry for non-metric, but you can still easily see the relative differences. As you can see, the Transcend is the biggest and heaviest, though not significantly so (about 20g heavier). In fact, it is so sturdy that I wouldn’t bother buying a case for it, so in that case it probably would actually end up a bit smaller/lighter.

I definitely recommend it unless you need more than 1TB (not sure when they will add a 2TB version).

That’s probably not a significant weight/size gain really, especially if you can just throw it in your bag and not worry about a case etc. Definitely sounds like a useful piece of kit – thanks for the heads up.

Do you use it yourself? If so, how it does it compare weight-wise with the more standard portable drive options?

I know many travelers opt for the Western Digital, which is also a fine choice. I’d like to suggest a third choice which most people aren’t familiar with, the Transcend Information (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B07B4CJ4KS/). The big plus of this drive is that it is military grade for shock and drop resistance, so the need you felt to protect your new Seagate is absent. I recommend anyone in the market for a new drive compare all three to see which is best for their needs. For example, at this time, I think Transcend maxes out at 1TB so that might be a good reason not to choose it.
