I lived in China 4 years, installed my first VPN from there, and never had a problem. VPN technology is used by all of China’s banks and online retailers, so there is no way for ISP’s to differentiate between you doing online banking/shopping in China, or using a VPN to access Twitter.

One problem is that services like Netflix, and possibly the Chinese, have developed lists of well known IP blocks owned by VPN’s, so it is probably best to pick small, new and lesser known, VPN’s, or contact a VPN and let them know where you are going, they may provide with some little known servers. I haven’t looked, but you can probably find some VPN’s that specialize in ‘unblocking’ China.

Regardless, it was never an issue for me after I initially discovered the problem.

What is the worst that will happen if I use a VPN to stay on twitter or other such sites?
